Ægitna Literary Agency Now Represents Untranslated Titles from the African Writers Series in French for Pearson

(version en français : ici)

We are delighted and grateful to announce that Ægitna Literary Agency is now the representative for the unpublished French-language rights of the iconic African Writers Series (AWS) for Pearson. This renowned collection, originally launched by Heinemann in 1962, is globally celebrated for its pivotal role in showcasing African literature. What sets this collaboration apart is the opportunity for French-speaking audiences to finally discover a treasure trove of influential works that, until now and for many works of this list, have not been translated into French.

A Rich Legacy of African Writers

The African Writers Series is not just a collection; it is a cornerstone in the global promotion of African literature. Closely associated with the renowned Ibadan founded Mbari Club—an intellectual hub for African writers, artists, and scholars itself stemmed from the legendary Black Orpheus Journal—AWS became an essential platform for the voices of postcolonial Africa. Since its inception, AWS has elevated the works of African writers by offering a space for their stories, aesthetics, and perspectives to reach a global audience. The serie has played a fundamental role in introducing international readers to African literature in multiple languages.

For over six decades, the African Writers Series has been a beacon for diverse and influential African voices, and its authors include some of the most groundbreaking and recognized writers from across the continent. The collection spans a variety of genres—novels, poetry, drama, non-fiction, and oral traditions—capturing the vast cultural and literary richness of Africa. This immense backlist is now continuing its essential journey through Pearson management, and UK publishers like Bloomsbury/Apollo hosting the Head of Zeus list.

A Stellar Line-Up of Authors

We are especially proud to represent the works of some of the most revered names in African literature, including:

  • Nelson Mandela, whose memoirs and reflections shaped our understanding of freedom and human dignity;
  • Chinua Achebe, author of fabulous African short-stories (hosting an original works by Sembene Ousmane);
  • Buchi Emecheta, a trailblazer for African women’s voices in literature;
  • Ken Saro-Wiwa, whose works highlight the environmental struggles and political resistance in Nigeria;
  • Yvonne Vera, whose poignant prose sheds light on the complexities of life in Zimbabwe.

In addition to these literary giants, the African Writers Series introduces readers to the works of authors like Lily Mabura, E.E. Sule, Benjamin Kwakye, Ama Ata Aidoo, Elechi Amadi, Beverley Naidoo, and many more, whose works embody the cultural diversity and narrative depth that characterize the African literary landscape.

Why Now Is the Time for AWS in French to Start a New Dynamic

A large part of the titles in this collection remains untranslated into French. Given the growing interest in African literature in the Francophone world, this collaboration represents a unique opportunity to fill a significant gap for French publishers all over the Globe. AWS is home to not only well-established voices but also lesser-known gems that have been largely inaccessible to French-speaking readers. Through this initiative, we aim to introduce these extraordinary works to a new readership (notably in Africa) that craves diverse and authentic African narratives.

Readers in the Francophone world are increasingly drawn to works that reflect the continent’s complex histories, vibrant aesthetics, and diverse literary experiences. With its rich tapestry of narratives, AWS is poised to meet this demand. Whether exploring themes of colonialism, liberation, identity, or social justice, these books offer profound insights into the African literary landscape its history, and its ongoing resonance with contemporary global issues.

A Collaborative Opportunity

We invite publishers, translators, and literary professionals to engage with us on this exciting venture. Together, we can make these works widely available, ensuring that the voices of Africa’s literary legends resonate across the Francophone world.

Let’s work together to extend the perspectives for this vast literary heritage towards French-speaking readers. We look forward to building meaningful partnerships to help bring the words of all these classics to new audiences & publishers eager to explore the depths of African literature from English into French.
